Process Overview

This portable arc welding solution utilizes the Rainbow Robotics RB3-730 cobot to automate welding operations in narrow, confined shipyard environments, developed in collaboration with welding system partner JCT. Traditional carriage welding systems are incapable of operating across multiple directions within constrained shipyard structures. By integrating an ultra-lightweight magnetic base and dedicated welding software, this system enables effortless portability, simple pendant-based parameter setup without direct teaching, and high-precision automated welding across tight spaces.

The Challenge

Shipbuilding environments often involve extremely narrow, confined, and structurally inconvenient compartments. Conventional carriage welding equipment lacks the directional flexibility to operate effectively under these restricted conditions. Furthermore, relying on manual welding ("Work by Hands") in tight quarters places heavy physical strain on workers and leads to inconsistent weld quality. To overcome these spatial and directional constraints while ensuring uniform, defect-free welds, shipyards required a flexible, highly portable robotic welding system capable of quick deployment and precise torch alignment.

Components

Robot

Rainbow Robotics Cobot (RB3-730)

Peripherals
  • Portable Magnetic Robot Base (total system weight of only 14 kg including robot body)

  • Teach Pendant

  • Welding Torch & Mount

Software & Functions

  • ArcSensing (Real-time seam tracking via current sensing)

  • TouchSensing (Workpiece detection & fine alignment, provided at no additional charge)

  • Built-in Weaving Profiles (Weaving2 with multiple predefined patterns)

Workflow

STEP 1.
System Mounting & Touch Sensing Alignment ㅡ The operator mounts the ultra-lightweight 14 kg system onto the metal workpiece using the portable magnetic robot base. The built-in TouchSensing function detects the material and automatically fine-tunes the alignment of the welding torch to the target joint or surface.
STEP 2.
Pendant-Based Setup Without Direct Teaching ㅡ Without requiring direct physical teaching, the operator inputs the distance between the material and the robot along with the welding conditions and weaving parameters directly via the teach pendant.
STEP 3.
Automated Arc Welding with Seam Tracking ㅡ The robot executes the welding sequence using the selected built-in weaving profile. During operation, the ArcSensing feature continuously tracks the center line of the weld and automatically adjusts the wire height in real time to produce uniform, high-quality weld beads.
